British actor Micheal Ward, best known for his breakout role as Jamie in Netflix’s Top Boy, has been formally charged with multiple sexual offences, the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Friday.
Ward, 27, faces two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. The charges relate to an alleged incident involving one woman in January 2023. He is scheduled to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court in London on 28 August.
The actor, who rose to prominence with roles in Top Boy and the 2019 film Blue Story, was awarded the BAFTA Rising Star award in 2020. He has since earned critical acclaim for performances in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology and Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light. Ward is also set to appear in the upcoming western drama Eddington, expected to premiere in the UK this August.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed the charges following a review of evidence submitted by the police.
“Having carefully reviewed a file of evidence, the CPS has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Micheal Ward,” said Catherine Baccas, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South. “Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward. We understand how difficult and impactful such investigations can be for complainants.”
The CPS also emphasized the importance of a fair trial and urged the public and media to avoid commentary that could affect legal proceedings.
“It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings,” Baccas added.
Ward has not yet made a public statement regarding the charges.
