Tinubu Urges Calm Ahead of FCT, Kano, Rivers Elections

President Bola Tinubu has called for peaceful and orderly conduct as Nigerians head to the polls on Saturday, February 21, 2026, in the FCT, Kano, and Rivers State.
In a statement on Friday, spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu urged voters to cast their ballots without fear and encouraged security agencies and INEC officials to perform their duties calmly and professionally.
“President Tinubu urged all eligible voters to come out and vote without fear, emphasising that the democratic process thrives best in an atmosphere of calm, tolerance, and mutual respect,” the statement read. He also called on political parties, candidates, and supporters to avoid violence, inflammatory rhetoric, or any actions that could undermine the credibility of the elections.
The President warned security agencies against high-handedness or intimidation, stressing that their role is to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of the vote. Tinubu also urged INEC to ensure timely accreditation, smooth voting, accurate collation, and prompt transmission of results, in line with the Electoral Act 2026.
The elections will cover all six FCT area councils, as well as bye-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II (Rivers State) and Kano Municipal and Ungogo (Kano State). Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to free, fair, and credible polls that reflect the will of the people.
