President Bola Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s re-election into the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, describing it as a strong global endorsement of the country’s maritime leadership and renewed international confidence in its reforms.
Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, announced the development on Saturday in Abuja. Nigeria secured a seat in Category C of the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 biennium during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on Friday, marking its return after a 14-year absence.
Tinubu said the victory reflects Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, security, environmental stewardship, and compliance with globally accepted standards in shipping operations.
He commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, officials of the ministry, NIMASA, and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for what he called their strategic engagement and professionalism throughout the campaign.
According to the President, the renewed mandate aligns with his administration’s broader plan to expand the blue economy, strengthen anti-piracy efforts, improve maritime infrastructure, and establish Nigeria as a leading regional shipping hub.
Tinubu further assured the global maritime community of Nigeria’s readiness to promote safer oceans, cleaner waterways, efficient shipping systems, and stronger cooperation in shaping fair and innovative maritime regulations.
He thanked member states for their support and pledged that Nigeria would justify the confidence reposed in it through sustained leadership and meaningful contributions to advancing international maritime goals.
