Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race with a late 2–0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the closing moments after Everton had frustrated the hosts for most of the contest.
In the 89th minute, Viktor Gyökeres broke the deadlock after confusion in the Everton defence. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford misjudged a cross from teenage midfielder Max Dowman, allowing the ball to fall kindly for Gyökeres to finish from close range.
As Everton pushed forward desperately for an equaliser in stoppage time, Arsenal struck again on the counter. Dowman raced through on goal and calmly finished to seal the victory, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at just 16 years old.
The dramatic win extended Arsenal’s strong run of form and moved Mikel Arteta’s side ten points clear of second-placed Manchester City.
Arsenal are now firmly on course for their first English league title in 22 years, having last lifted the trophy in 2004.
Attention now turns to Europe as the Gunners prepare for a crucial UEFA Champions League last-16 second-leg clash with Bayer Leverkusen. The North London side will also face Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium later this month.
Elsewhere, Chelsea suffered another setback after losing 1–0 at home to Newcastle United thanks to a goal from Anthony Gordon.
In other results, Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Sunderland 1–0 to climb into the top half of the Premier League standings.
