Storm Boris Devastates Central and Eastern Europe: Lives Lost in Austria, Poland, and Romania

A firefighter has tragically lost their life during a flood rescue in Austria, and one person has drowned in Poland, as torrential rain from Storm Boris continues to ravage Central and Eastern Europe.

Austria’s province surrounding Vienna has been declared a disaster area, with officials describing the situation as “an unprecedented extreme event.” In Romania, where four people were killed on Saturday, two others remain missing, and several more are unaccounted for in the Czech Republic.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed one death on Sunday and urged affected residents to cooperate with rescue efforts.

In the Czech Republic, flooding has forced evacuations and left 51,000 households in the northern region without power, according to Czech power company CEZ. Flood barriers have been erected in the capital, Prague, as a precaution.

Storm Boris proved particularly deadly in Romania’s southeastern Galati region, where four people lost their lives in the floods. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis attributed the crisis to climate change, saying, “We are again facing the effects of climate change, which are increasingly present on the European continent, with dramatic consequences.”

The extreme rainfall linked to Storm Boris highlights the growing impact of climate change, as a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, increasing the likelihood of intense precipitation in Europe and beyond.
