South Korea’s National Assembly has voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, with 204 lawmakers supporting the motion. This historic decision immediately suspends Yoon from office, placing Prime Minister Han Duck-soo in the role of acting president.
The impeachment does not ensure Yoon’s permanent removal from office. The Constitutional Court will now convene a trial to review the motion, a process that could span several weeks. At least six of the nine court justices must vote to uphold the impeachment for Yoon to be officially removed from power.
Should the court affirm the decision, South Korea would face a snap presidential election within 60 days. Until the court delivers its ruling, the nation remains in a state of political uncertainty, with Yoon’s presidency and leadership future hanging in the balance.
