Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on media professionals in Nigeria to focus on speaking truth to power objectively rather than antagonizing the government.
Speaking at the public presentation of the book Persona Non Grata, authored by journalist Ismail Omipidan, Shettima emphasized the importance of distinguishing between constructive critique and unwarranted opposition. The event took place on Saturday at the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Abuja Continental Hotel.
“There is a distinction between antagonizing a government and speaking truth to power. The latter serves a greater good and humanity, while the former is often self-serving and ultimately futile,” the Vice President stated.
Drawing insights from Plato’s The Republic, Shettima underscored the role of the intellectual class, particularly journalists, as the conscience of the nation. He stressed that political leaders rely on informed and courageous media professionals to help shape a progressive society.
“True courage lies in resisting compromise in the pursuit of truth and being able to tell the truth, even in a congress of critics. Smear campaigns without regard for facts are not acts of courage but cowardice,” he added.
Shettima urged both media practitioners and national leaders to draw the line between courage and cowardice while upholding integrity and service to society.
The book launch was hosted by Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, who praised the author’s dedication and professionalism in journalism. The book reviewer, Mr. Lasisi Olagunju, Editor of Saturday Tribune, described the 31-chapter work as a detailed chronicle of Omipidan’s experiences in journalism and life.
In his remarks, Omipidan expressed gratitude to the Vice President for honoring the invitation and reflected on his journey in journalism and public service.
The event highlighted the essential role of the media in fostering accountability and the need for integrity in reporting Nigeria’s evolving political and social landscape.
