Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday swore in newly elected local government chairmen and vice chairmen across Lagos State, urging them to uphold inclusive, transparent, and people-focused governance that delivers tangible development to every household.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, Sanwo-Olu described their election victories as “a deeper call to selfless service,” emphasizing that the true measure of leadership lies in impact at the grassroots level.
“You were elected to serve the people, including those who may not have voted for you,” the governor said. “The people want better roads, markets, schools, and youth engagement. These are not abstract expectations—they are real and measurable.”
He reminded the new chairmen that local governments are central to grassroots development, especially in a megacity like Lagos, which serves as Nigeria’s economic backbone.
“The buck now stops with you. Leadership must not be about personal gains. Lagos is counting on you to bring development to every street and community. Let the underserved communities feel your impact,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The governor also stressed transparency and accountability, urging residents to monitor and hold their local officials to their promises.
In his remarks, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Bolaji Kayode, congratulated the newly inaugurated officials, describing their election as a testament to grassroots trust and broad-based support.
“The credibility of your emergence anchored on transparency has culminated in this swearing-in ceremony,” Kayode noted, also commending Sanwo-Olu for promoting grassroots democracy.
He paid special tribute to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he credited for laying the visionary foundation that continues to guide democratic institutions in Lagos.
Speaking on behalf of the new officials, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LCDA, Hon. Sesan Olowa, expressed appreciation to the governor, deputy governor, party leaders, and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) for their support throughout the electoral process.
“We are fully ready for this task. We give you our word we will not let you down,” Olowa pledged.
The event marks a significant step in strengthening local governance in Lagos, as the new chairmen are expected to accelerate grassroots development, uphold public trust, and ensure inclusive service delivery across the state’s communities.
