The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Nigeria to urgently develop a clear national strategy and policy framework to harness emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), for sustainable development.
He made the call at the 8th Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria held in Kano, themed “Unlocking the Potentials of Artificial Intelligence: University Governance, Internationalization and Rankings.”
Sanusi warned that Nigeria risks falling behind other countries if it fails to adopt structured policies to guide technological advancement. “This country needs a strategy. This country needs a policy framework. This country needs to be ready for the century that we are in,” he said.
He urged Nigerian universities to take the lead in developing a national AI roadmap, stressing that academic institutions must go beyond teaching and research to actively shape national policy and development direction.
According to him, countries such as Ghana have already developed and begun implementing AI strategies focused on youth training, data development, and economic transformation.
Sanusi also highlighted the role of universities as key pillars of civil society, noting that academic freedom and intellectual engagement are essential for governance, accountability, and national progress. “Without intellectuals, without academic freedom, the checks and balances required for a vibrant civil society will disappear,” he warned.
He commended state governments for supporting pro-chancellors in strengthening university governance and policy direction.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria (COPSUN), Ayodeji Omole, emphasised the need for collaboration among stakeholders to address challenges facing state-owned universities. He noted that with over 60 state-owned institutions across Nigeria, sustained engagement is necessary to improve governance, coordination, and institutional performance.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Chief of Staff Suleiman Wali Sani, said education remains a top priority for the state government. He highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure, digital learning, research, and staff development aimed at improving global competitiveness.
He added that the conference provides an opportunity for stakeholders to develop practical solutions for strengthening university governance, funding, innovation, and academic standards across Nigeria.
