Russian Drone Crashes Into Romanian Apartment Building, Prompting NATO Security Concerns

A Russian drone involved in an overnight attack on Ukraine crashed into a residential building in eastern Romania on Friday, injuring two people and raising fresh security concerns within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization alliance.

Romanian authorities said the drone entered the country’s airspace before striking the roof of an apartment building in the city of Galați, triggering a fire. Two residents sustained minor injuries, while several others were evacuated as emergency crews responded to the scene.

Romania’s Defense Ministry said the drone was tracked by radar after crossing into Romanian territory. The city of Galați lies along the Danube River near the borders with Moldova and Ukraine.

Following the incident, Romania called on NATO to accelerate the deployment of anti-drone capabilities, describing the drone’s incursion as a serious breach of international law.

The Romanian military scrambled two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets and a military helicopter, which were authorized to engage potential threats if necessary. Authorities also issued emergency alerts to residents in affected areas.

The crash occurred during a large-scale Russian aerial assault on Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s air force, Russian forces launched 232 drones and one ballistic missile overnight. Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted 217 drones, though strikes were recorded in 14 locations across the country.

Russia has increasingly relied on long-range drones and ballistic missiles in its campaign against Ukraine, frequently targeting energy infrastructure and urban centers.

The incident drew swift international condemnation.

Alexander Stubb described the strike as another escalation in Russia’s war against Ukraine, writing on social media that “Russia is crossing another line in its war of aggression against Ukraine.”

Stubb added that the matter was being discussed within NATO, though he did not provide further details.

Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the incident, saying it demonstrated that Russia had “crossed yet another line.”

She said the European Union would continue strengthening security along its eastern frontier and was preparing an additional package of sanctions against Russia, which would mark the bloc’s 21st round of punitive measures since the war began.
