Several officials of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) have resigned, citing internal challenges and the Supreme Court’s recent annulment of the October 5, 2024, local government elections.
The Supreme Court ruled that the elections failed to comply with electoral guidelines, prompting RSIEC to schedule a fresh poll for August 9, 2025.
RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), announced the new election date during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, following Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s directive to commence preparations.
Fubara, who remains in a political battle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, over control of the state’s political structure, is pushing for a transparent electoral process.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has launched an investigation into RSIEC’s handling of the annulled October 2024 elections.
