Reps Seek Multi-Campus Police Academy Across Six Geo-Political Zones

The House of Representatives has called for the establishment of campuses of the Nigeria Police Academy in each of Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, in line with provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021.

Adopting a motion moved by Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul (APC, Lagos) during Thursday’s plenary, the House urged President Bola Tinubu to recognise the strategic importance of decentralising the Academy and to approve the expansion plan already proposed by the Academy’s Governing Council.

The lawmakers further directed the Governing Council of the Police Academy to commence immediate implementation of the Act’s provisions by transforming the institution into a multi-campus university to enhance police training, boost national security, and improve internal development.

The House also tasked the National Universities Commission (NUC) with reviewing and approving proposals from the Governing Council to facilitate the establishment of additional campuses.

To ensure the initiative receives legislative and financial support, the House mandated its Committees on Police Institutions, Police Affairs, University Education, and Appropriations to liaise with the Academy’s Governing Council to provide necessary budgetary and legislative backing.

While leading the debate, Kalejaiye reminded lawmakers that the 2021 Act empowers the Academy to operate as a full-fledged degree-awarding institution, and specifically provides for the establishment of colleges, faculties, and campuses nationwide subject to NUC approval.

He expressed concern that, despite these provisions, the Nigeria Police Academy still operates only one campus in Wudil, Kano State, which significantly limits access to modern police education and hinders the Academy’s national outlook.

“The establishment of more campuses in each geo-political zone will not only promote inclusiveness but also expand capacity for the effective training of police officers across the country,” Kalejaiye said.

Lawmakers expressed broad support for the motion, underscoring the need for modernised and decentralised police training amid growing national security challenges.
