PSC Urges Retired Officers to Cancel Protest, Says Pension Issues Under Review

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has appealed to retired police officers across Nigeria to suspend their planned nationwide protest over pension-related grievances, assuring them that relevant government agencies are actively reviewing their concerns.

In a statement issued by the PSC’s Head of Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission described the proposed demonstration as “ill-advised” and “diversionary,” particularly at a time when significant strides are being made to address the challenges surrounding the pension structure for retired personnel.

The statement reaffirmed that PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), remains firmly opposed to the current discriminatory pension system affecting some categories of retired police officers. Argungu has long championed the push for a unified and democratized pension scheme for the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Commission believes that relevant government agencies are actively examining the disparities in the pension structure with the goal of closing the gap,” Ani stated.

The Commission urged the affected officers to pursue peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement, warning that confrontation at this critical stage could hinder ongoing progress.

“The nation cannot afford any form of distraction at this crucial stage of its democratic journey,” Ani added.

While acknowledging the frustration and hardship faced by many retired officers, the PSC reiterated its unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of all members of the police service both serving and retired. It encouraged protest organisers to reconsider their position and return to the negotiation table, where solutions are being earnestly pursued.

The appeal comes amid growing agitation among retired officers, many of whom have voiced dissatisfaction with their current pension packages and are demanding parity with their counterparts under different pension schemes. However, the PSC stressed that resorting to street protests could derail sensitive negotiations already underway within the corridors of government.

“We urge all stakeholders to maintain calm and patience as the issues are addressed through proper channels,” the statement concluded.
