Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu have been elected National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a consensus-led process at the party’s 2026 national convention held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium Velodrome, Abuja, on Sunday.
The convention, attended by prominent figures including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, marked a pivotal moment for party reconciliation after months of internal crisis.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, identified as the PDP’s national leader, said the party’s healing process has begun and affirmed its readiness for the 2027 general elections.
“So many people have spoken here… I have told Senator Saraki that, by the grace of God, the PDP will be on the ballot in 2027,” Wike said, emphasizing inclusiveness and unity within the party.
Mohammed urged members to embrace reconciliation and unity, stating, “Today, we choose a higher path. We choose inclusiveness over exclusion, unity over division, we choose renewal over decline… This convention is therefore not just about the election; it is about restoration, order, not just about position.”
The convention followed months of legal and political contestation after a previous convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, which had led to court battles. A Federal High Court had restrained the party from holding the Ibadan convention, a decision later upheld by the Court of Appeal. The Tanimu Turaki faction, backed by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, subsequently challenged the ruling at the Supreme Court.
Former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Chairman of the convention planning committee, emphasized that the PDP’s doors for reconciliation would remain open even after the convention, signaling a new chapter as the party positions itself for the 2027 elections.
