Oyo State to Implement N80,000 Minimum Wage from January 2025

The Oyo State Government has announced plans to begin payment of the approved N80,000 minimum wage for workers starting January 2025.

Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, following an agreement reached between the government and organized labour.

Key government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, and the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, signed the agreement on behalf of the state. Labour leaders, Comrades Kayode Martins of the NLC and Bosun Olabiyi of the TUC, represented the organized labour.

The new wage structure will take effect nominally from July 1, 2024, but workers will start receiving financial benefits from January 1, 2025. Additionally, retirees between July and December 2024 will have their retirement benefits calculated based on the new minimum wage.

The Commissioner urged ministries and departments to intensify revenue-generation efforts to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Currently, the state spends over N6 billion monthly on salaries, amounting to more than N77 billion annually, making it one of the top three states for labour remuneration in Nigeria.

As 2025 begins with the new salary scale, workers are also set to end 2024 with the traditional 13th-month salary—a benefit introduced under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration in 2019.
