Osimhen Sinks Liverpool as Galatasaray End 7-Year Wait

Galatasaray secured their first UEFA Champions League victory of the season and their first at home in seven years with a 1-0 triumph over Premier League champions Liverpool on Tuesday night.

The decisive moment came early in the game when Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen converted from the penalty spot. His strike proved enough to hand the Turkish giants a historic victory against opponents who had been unbeaten in all competitions until last weekend’s defeat to Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot made three changes from the side that lost to Palace, leaving Mohamed Salah and record signing Alexander Isak on the bench. However, the shake-up failed to produce results as the Reds suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season. They now turn their focus to the Premier League, where they face Chelsea this weekend without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Elsewhere on Champions League night:

  • Chelsea edged Benfica, coached by José Mourinho, 1-0 at Old Trafford in a narrow win marked by yet another red card the third in as many matches as Brazilian forward João Pedro was sent off.
  • Real Madrid showed no signs of fatigue with a crushing 5-0 win at Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan.
  • Bayern Munich cruised to a 5-1 victory at Pafos in Cyprus.
  • Atletico Madrid thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1, with coach Diego Simeone watching from the stands while serving a suspension for a previous altercation with a Liverpool fan.
