Ogun Governor Abiodun Rejects Sharia Court, Orders Immediate Disbandment

Governor Dapo Abiodun has warned against any attempt to establish a Sharia Court in Ogun State, stating that such a move lacks legal backing.

In a statement on Tuesday, Abiodun emphasized that only courts recognized by the Nigerian Constitution and state laws are authorized to operate. He listed the Magistrates’ Courts, High Court, Customary Courts, Customary Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court as the legally recognized judicial bodies.

“No Sharia Court is authorized to operate within Ogun State,” Abiodun stated. “No law in the state has established such a court, and Sharia law is not part of the legal framework governing the state.”

While affirming the government’s commitment to religious freedom, the governor stressed that this does not extend to the creation of unauthorized judicial bodies.

He ordered those behind the alleged Sharia Court to immediately cease all activities and disband the illegal entity. The public was also advised to disregard any summons, documents, or persons associated with the unauthorized court and report such occurrences to the state authorities.

Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and preventing any breakdown of order in Ogun State.
