NYC’s Parking Revolution: Introducing Pay-by-Plate Technology

New York City’s parking meters are set for a modernization, requiring drivers to memorize their license plate numbers.

City officials will introduce new meter technology on Wednesday, bidding farewell to the traditional paper receipts placed on dashboards.

Motorists can now input their license plate number into a kiosk or utilize the Park NYC app for parking payment.

These upgraded meters will offer real-time data to NYPD traffic enforcement agents, facilitating efficient monitoring of parking durations.

The adoption of pay-by-plate technology will also lead to paper savings, with the city’s parking meters currently printing approximately 2,500 miles of receipts annually—enough to span from New York City to Los Angeles.

Department of Transportation Commissioner Yadanis Rodriguez will launch the new meter rollout in Washington Heights on Wednesday morning.

The initiative will commence in north Manhattan before gradually expanding southward and into the outer boroughs.
