The Nigerian Army has confirmed that no one was killed in the early morning explosion in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Saturday.
Brig-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, director of Army Public Relations, said in a statement that there was no need to be worried because troops from the Joint Task Force (JTF) North-East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), had effectively responded to the security breach by suspected Boko Haram (BH) and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
“Although no lives were lost, a minor injury was inflicted,” he stated.
He claimed the sound of explosives was heard in the early hours of Saturday in Gomari community and 1000 Housing Estate in Maiduguri, with gunfire fired into the communities by BH/ISWAP criminals, causing some damage and apprehension in residential areas.
The Army spokesman, however, assured that ground troops in conjunction with the Air Component of OPHK responded swiftly and dominated the area with ground and air interdictions that successfully neutralized the threats and infiltration attempts by the terrorists.
As a result, he urged the population not to be alarmed, noting that troops were on the ground and actively controlling the city to efficiently eliminate any perceived danger.
He also advised the good people of Maiduguri to carry on with their daily lives and offer actionable information on the criminal groups’ movements.
