The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to consult with former President Goodluck Jonathan to address Nigeria’s worsening economic challenges. This appeal comes amidst rising public outcry following the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) second fuel price hike within a month, which saw petrol prices soar to ₦1,030 per litre in Abuja and ₦998 in Lagos.
Dipo Olaoyoku, NNPP National Secretary, criticized the administration for its handling of the economy, highlighting that the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira have exacerbated inflation and worsened the cost of living. Olaoyoku stressed that Tinubu’s approach lacked expert guidance and that surrounding himself with political allies rather than competent technocrats is a misstep.
He urged the President to seek advice from former President Jonathan, citing his ability to maintain a stable naira-to-dollar exchange rate at ₦200 during his tenure, despite external pressures. The NNPP believes Jonathan’s expertise could provide the insights needed to navigate the ongoing economic crisis.
