NNPCL Donates 35 CNG Buses to Boost Clean Energy Drive

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has handed over 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) as part of ongoing efforts to promote cleaner, more affordable energy across Nigeria.

At the handover ceremony held on Monday, July 7, NNPCL Group CEO, Bashir Ojulari, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s gas-led energy transition agenda, describing the donation as a significant stride toward providing sustainable fuel alternatives for Nigerians.

“This initiative reflects our determination to sustain a cleaner, cheaper energy option for motorists across Nigeria. We have made tremendous strides in gas supply, infrastructure, and distribution,” Ojulari stated.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the buses as “tools of economic relief, social equity, and environmental responsibility.”

“They represent a future where Nigerians can commute safely and affordably. It’s a bold step under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to cut transport costs, reduce reliance on petrol, and harness our vast natural gas reserves,” Ekpo said.

The Pi-CNG initiative is a central part of Nigeria’s national strategy to transition from petrol dependency to natural gas as a primary fuel source, reduce carbon emissions, and ease the economic burden following the removal of fuel subsidies.

The rollout of CNG-powered buses marks a significant step toward greener transportation, economic sustainability, and energy diversification across the country.
