Nnamdi Kanu Defends Radio Biafra’s Establishment in Court, Reveals Funding Sources

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has defended the creation of Radio Biafra as a means to promote truth, peace, and human rights, amid his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.

During a recorded interrogation played in open court on Tuesday, Kanu explained that the station, which was registered with the UK government, was aimed at advocating for the rights of the Biafran people. He acknowledged, however, that broadcasting in Nigeria without a licence from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) was illegal.

The prosecution presented a motion to shield the identities of witnesses for security reasons, which was granted by the court after no objections were raised by the defense.

In his testimony, the first prosecution witness, a DSS operative identified as “AAA,” described his role in Kanu’s arrest in Lagos on October 15, 2015, and the recovery of broadcasting devices during the operation.

Kanu also revealed that Radio Biafra was funded by international supporters, with financial reports made available to UK authorities. He further contended that his interrogation had been conducted without legal representation, which he argued violated legal procedures.

All exhibits presented by the prosecution were admitted as evidence by the court.
