Joe Igbokwe, a long-time supporter of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed frustration over the rising cost of living in Nigeria. In a Facebook post on Friday, Igbokwe lamented that a bag of rice now costs over ₦100,000, despite the presence of numerous rice mills in the country.
Reflecting on the situation, Igbokwe remarked, “I am constrained to say that the men and women that will rescue this country from self-inflicted pains and tears are not born yet.” His statement highlights growing dissatisfaction, even among some of Tinubu’s staunch supporters, regarding current economic policies.
Igbokwe, who actively campaigned for Tinubu, has recently criticized certain aspects of the administration. Two weeks ago, he raised concerns about the hike in electricity tariffs, pointing out how it negatively impacts businesses. In a separate Facebook post, Igbokwe complained that ₦20,000 worth of electricity units lasted just one day in his small Surulere office, a significant increase from the previous consumption levels.
He urged President Tinubu to review the electricity tariffs, fearing that unchecked increases could harm businesses and worsen the economic burden on Nigerians.
