Nigeria’s Badminton Team Secures Seven Medals at All Africa Senior Championship 2024


Nigeria’s contingent at the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Cairo 2024 showcased remarkable performance, clinching a total of seven medals, including a historic fifth African title for the country’s top player, Anuoluwapo Opeyori.
Opeyori’s exceptional streak continued as he secured his third consecutive title in Egypt, adding to his previous victories in Nigeria, Morocco, Uganda, and South Africa. His dominance in the Men’s Singles event was evident as he defeated Mauritian Georges Julien Paul in a thrilling final match.
Despite a narrow loss to Algeria in the Men’s Team event finals, Nigeria’s male team displayed commendable skill, earning a silver medal. The Women’s team secured a bronze after a tough battle against the Ugandan women’s team in the semifinals.
In individual events, Nigeria’s Yunusa Momoh Godwin Olofua and others showcased impressive performances, securing medals in various categories. The relatively new pairs demonstrated resilience and talent, earning Nigeria one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals across doubles categories.
Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, expressed gratitude for the team’s performance while acknowledging the loss in the Men’s Team event finals. He extended appreciation to the Ministry of Sports Development for its support and assured continued backing for players across all levels.
