Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed optimism that Nigeria will achieve greatness within his lifetime, despite its current challenges.
Obasanjo made this statement in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during his 88th birthday celebration, responding to the goodwill messages from friends and well-wishers.
He reaffirmed his belief in Nigeria’s potential, urging citizens, particularly those under 80, to prepare for the task of nation-building. According to him, national progress requires the collective dedication of its people.
Describing himself as an “incurable optimist,” Obasanjo said, “Yes, the situation is bad, no doubt, but I believe in my lifetime, we will have the Nigeria that we will all be proud of.”
He also extended his appreciation for the birthday tributes, praying for longevity for his well-wishers. “May all of you who have reached 80 attain 90 and 100, and I will celebrate that with you,” he said.
For younger Nigerians, he emphasized their duty in shaping the country’s future. “Let us bear in mind that as Nigerians, there is an obligation for us, and if we fulfill it, we will have an enviable Nigeria in our lifetime.”
