Vice-President Kashim Shettima will today, Wednesday, September 24, deliver Nigeria’s national statement on behalf of President Bola Tinubu at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Shettima is scheduled to speak between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. local time. During the address, Nigeria is expected to unveil its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
Earlier, the vice-president joined other world leaders at the Assembly’s opening session, where U.S. President Donald Trump delivered the keynote address.
Speaking on the significance of Nigeria’s statement, Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice-President), said the country’s message would resonate globally.
“Whether in educational diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, sports, security, or economic diplomacy, President Tinubu has transformed how Nigeria engages with the international community. He has overhauled the tone and content of our foreign policy,” Nkwocha said.
He recalled Tinubu’s 2024 UNGA address, which called for reforms including more seats for Africa on the UN Security Council, describing it as a powerful statement of Nigeria’s renewed global leadership.
