The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has called on the Federal Government to take decisive action against the recent surge in killings, kidnappings, and banditry in the country.
The appeal was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by NIREC, led by the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Daniel Okoh, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
The council expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in insecurity, describing the current situation as “greatly perturbed” and “disheartening.” NIREC highlighted several recent incidents, including the killing of thirteen farmers in Shiroro LGA of Niger State, the abduction of one hundred and fifty people in Gobir District, Sokoto State, the brutal murder of the District Head of Gatawa in Sokoto State, and a thwarted bandit attack in Malumfashi LGA of Katsina State, among others.
“The rates at which banditry, abductions, and killings are escalating are beyond alarming,” the statement, signed by NIREC Secretary Cornelius Omonokhua, read.
“This spate of attacks within the span of one week is very disheartening and of great concern.” NIREC has urged the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts to combat these crimes and restore safety and security, allowing citizens to conduct their daily activities without fear. The council also extended condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and prayed for the safe return of those still in captivity.
