Nigeria Governors’ Forum Discusses Minimum Wage, LG Autonomy

The governors of Nigeria’s thirty-six states, under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), are convening to address the contentious issues of the new minimum wage proposal and local government autonomy.
The meeting follows previous concerns voiced by the governors regarding the Federal Government’s proposed ₦60,000 minimum wage, which they deemed unsustainable.
The governors argued that such a wage increase would force many states to allocate their entire monthly federation account disbursements solely to salary payments. They have called for a balanced and sustainable minimum wage agreement from the tripartite committee.
In light of these concerns, the Federal Government announced on Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu would engage in further consultations before making a decision on the new minimum wage.
Another significant topic on the agenda is the ongoing debate over local government autonomy. The governors are also set to discuss various critical national issues affecting Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape.
This high-level meeting aims to foster collaborative solutions and develop strategic initiatives to address the country’s challenges, striving for a unified and effective approach to governance.
