President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron as “productive,” saying both leaders renewed their commitment to deepening cooperation between Nigeria and France.
In a post on his official X handle on Wednesday, Tinubu revealed that the two held a private working lunch at the Élysée Palace in Paris on September 10, 2025.
“Had a productive lunch with President Emmanuel Macron. We reviewed key areas of cooperation between Nigeria and France and agreed to deepen our partnership for mutual prosperity and global stability,” Tinubu wrote.
The meeting came as the Nigerian leader began a 10-day vacation on September 4, which his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said would be spent between France and the United Kingdom before his return to Nigeria.
Tinubu’s annual leave followed a two-week official trip to Japan and Brazil. He departed Abuja on August 15, attended the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22, and later travelled to Brasilia for a state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
This marks Tinubu’s second trip to France in six months. In April 2025, he undertook a short working visit to review his administration’s mid-term performance and assess key milestones a move that drew criticism from opposition groups. The Presidency, however, dismissed speculation at the time that he travelled for medical reasons.
