Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Nigerian Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, is positioned to serve a second term as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO confirmed that Okonjo-Iweala, who became the first woman to lead the organization on March 1, 2021, remains the only candidate for the role.
According to a statement from the WTO on Saturday, Okonjo-Iweala formally expressed her willingness to continue for a second four-year term on September 16. The organization initiated the nomination process on October 8, allowing submissions until November 8. However, WTO General Council Chair Petter Ølberg informed member nations that no additional nominations had been received by the deadline.
Ølberg announced on the WTO’s website that he will convene a special General Council meeting on November 28 and 29. On the first day, Okonjo-Iweala is expected to present her vision for the WTO, followed by a question-and-answer session with members. A formal decision on her appointment will be made on the second day, November 29.
With no opposing candidates, Okonjo-Iweala is likely to be re-elected unopposed, allowing her to continue steering the organization’s global trade policies and initiatives for another term.
