New National ID Cards to Be Issued Via Banks, Says NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced a significant update regarding the issuance of national ID cards, stating that they will now be distributed to applicants through their respective banks.
In a Friday update shared on its official X handle, NIMC revealed that it is collaborating with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) to facilitate the delivery of ID cards to applicants.
According to the agency, the distribution process will align with existing protocols for the issuance of Debit/Credit cards, with the cards being issued through applicants’ banks.
Applicants are advised to request their ID cards, linked with their National Identification Numbers (NIN), through various channels including the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.
“The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS,” NIMC said.
“The card can be picked up by holders at the designated center or delivered to the applicants at the requested location at an extra cost to be borne by the applicants,” the update read.
