To address the ongoing flooding and natural disasters across Nigeria, the National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N3 billion in relief funds for each state government. This decision was announced during the 144th NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed shared that the funds are intended to help state governments manage the immediate impacts of floods, erosion, drought, and other environmental crises. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the governors for the timely financial support, which is expected to aid affected communities across the country.
“The NEC thoroughly reviewed the flooding issues affecting various states,” Mohammed said. “Governors are appreciative of the federal government’s decision to release N3 billion to support palliative measures in flood-stricken areas.”
He pointed out the severe consequences of the floods, especially in the North-East, where significant infrastructure, including a major route between Kano and Maiduguri, has been damaged. This has led to loss of life and extensive property damage, posing significant challenges for state governments in maintaining food security.
Additionally, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule announced the formation of a new governance structure to oversee the effectiveness of the relief efforts. A reconstituted Flood Committee, which includes governors from Kogi, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Ebonyi, Bauchi, Bayelsa, and Jigawa states, as well as key federal officials, will now manage the interventions.
Governor Sule, who will chair the committee, stated that all states must submit detailed damage reports by Monday. These reports should cover affected farms, schools, and infrastructure. “The newly appointed committee members will be essential in addressing the flood-related challenges ahead,” Sule added.
