Murtala Yakubu Ajaka Optimistic as Supreme Court Reviews Kogi Governorship Dispute

The Supreme Court has begun hearings on the contested governorship election in Kogi State, with Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, expressing strong confidence in a favorable outcome.
Ajaka, challenging the election results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in favor of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), addressed journalists after the court session. He stated, “We have presented a robust case to the Supreme Court, and we are optimistic that justice will be served. The people of Kogi State deserve a leader chosen through a truly free and fair election, and we believe our case will uphold the people’s will.”
Ajaka’s legal battle centers on allegations of electoral fraud and irregularities, including issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and discrepancies in the vote count. His challenge specifically targets results from five local government areas: Okene, Adavi, Okehi, Ajaokuta, and Lokoja, citing over-voting and other malpractices.
Ajaka’s team argues that INEC’s declaration of Ododo as the winner was flawed by numerous inconsistencies and breaches of electoral laws. As the Supreme Court proceedings continue, the outcome will significantly impact Nigeria’s electoral integrity and Kogi State’s political future.
Ajaka has urged his supporters to stay patient and peaceful, emphasizing that the fight extends beyond this election to safeguarding the democratic process. The Supreme Court’s ruling is highly anticipated and could set a critical precedent for Nigeria’s elections.
