Mark Zuckerberg Meets with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago Despite Past Tensions

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, just months after Trump publicly threatened the tech mogul with imprisonment.

In his August book, Trump declared that Zuckerberg would “spend the rest of his life in prison” if he attempted to interfere in the 2024 U.S. election. However, Trump later softened his tone, telling a podcast in October that it was “nice” Zuckerberg was “staying out of the election” and even thanked him for a personal phone call after Trump survived an assassination attempt.

“Mark was grateful for the invitation to join President Trump for dinner and the opportunity to meet with members of his team about the incoming administration,” a Meta spokesperson told the BBC, adding, “It’s an important time for the future of American innovation.”

The meeting highlights a warming relationship between the two, which has been fraught in the past. Trump was banned from Facebook and Instagram in 2021 following the Capitol riot, with Meta citing his “praise for people engaged in violence.” The suspension was lifted two years later.

Zuckerberg himself has faced scrutiny for his handling of political content. In August, he expressed regret over the de-promotion of stories about Hunter Biden, a central point of Republican criticism before the 2020 election. He also pledged to cease contributions toward electoral infrastructure, following backlash over a $400 million donation in 2020 that some viewed as circumventing campaign finance rules.

Zuckerberg has maintained that his actions were intended to be non-partisan, stating his goal is to remain neutral in elections. The Mar-a-Lago meeting suggests a potential shift in dynamics as both figures prepare for Trump’s second presidential term.
