Labour Party Warns APC Over Alleged Threat to Peter Obi’s Safety

The Labour Party (LP) has declared it will hold the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accountable if any harm befalls Peter Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, or his associates.

In a statement signed in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator Nanedi Usman, Chairperson of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, condemned remarks made by Morka during a January 5 interview on Arise Television, describing them as a “direct threat” to Obi.

Usman asserted:
“It is with great concern and a deep sense of responsibility that I condemn the incendiary remarks made by Mr. Felix Morka. His statements not only threaten the life, reputation, and business interests of Mr. Peter Obi but also affront the principles of democracy, decency, and responsible political engagement.”

Highlighting Obi’s track record of integrity and commitment to governance, Usman criticized the APC for resorting to what she termed baseless allegations and threats. She accused the party of deflecting from critical issues affecting Nigerians.

“Such inflammatory rhetoric has no place in our democracy. It undermines national unity, discourages productive political discourse, and endangers lives. We remind Mr. Felix Morka and the APC leadership that words have consequences. The Labour Party will hold them accountable for any harm that befalls Mr. Peter Obi or his associates,” Usman stated.

The LP chairperson called on security agencies to investigate the matter and take action against individuals using public platforms to incite violence or issue veiled threats. She urged the APC to issue a public apology and retract Morka’s remarks, emphasizing that anything less would signify tacit approval of his behavior.

“Mr. Peter Obi represents hope and progress for millions of Nigerians, and we will continue to stand by him in his pursuit of a better Nigeria,” Usman said, reiterating the LP’s commitment to transparency, justice, and inclusion.

She concluded by urging political leaders to prioritize addressing national challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, and economic instability over petty attacks, stressing that the true measure of leadership lies in fostering unity and respect even amid disagreements.
