The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has set up a disciplinary committee to investigate allegations of anti-party activities involving Abia State Governor Alex Otti and other members. The development was announced on Friday following the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at LP headquarters.
According to the NEC, it had reviewed alleged misconduct by Governor Otti and others, prompting the formation of a disciplinary committee headed by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi. The committee, which also includes Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim as Secretary and members Barr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Barr. Callistus Ihejiagwa, is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.
The NEC praised the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the LP leadership dispute, describing it as a reaffirmation of the supremacy of political parties and a validation of the current leadership. The council reiterated that the Labour Party will not enter any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing its commitment to contesting independently.
Additionally, the NEC confirmed that it had duly notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the 2024 National Convention, held in Nnewi on March 27, 2024. The council ratified the ad-hoc delegates list and affirmed that the convention complied fully with the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act, and LP’s internal guidelines.
The NEC expressed renewed confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Barr. Julius Abure and pledged ongoing support. Commending the Supreme Court’s April 4 ruling, which validated the outcomes of the 2024 convention, the council emphasized its commitment to peace and reconciliation, urging aggrieved members to return for the sake of unity.
The disciplinary committee’s investigation into Governor Otti is expected to shed light on the allegations, though Otti has yet to make a public statement. Meanwhile, the Labour Party is moving forward with preparations for the Anambra governorship election, rallying support for Chief Moghalu.
