Labour Party Distances Itself from Coalition Talks Ahead of 2027 Elections

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Julius Abure-led National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has firmly distanced itself from ongoing coalition talks among major opposition parties. These discussions aim to form a strong alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming election cycle.

While former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been meeting with opposition leaders, Abure made it clear that under his leadership, the Labour Party is not part of any such coalition. Speaking to reporters after the party’s NEC meeting in Abuja, Abure emphasized that the LP would not compromise its leadership or autonomy in any alliance.

A statement issued by the NEC declared: “The Party is not and will not be part of any coalition for the 2027 General Election. Instead, we will focus on rebuilding, repositioning, re-strategizing, reconciling, strengthening, and expanding our membership to ensure victory in 2027.”

The NEC also reiterated its commitment to internal peace and reconciliation, urging all disgruntled members to put aside differences for the greater good of the party and the nation. Additionally, the council reaffirmed its belief in Nigeria’s democracy and its dedication to advancing the country’s development through Labour Party policies.

In other key outcomes from the meeting, Abure announced the formation of a disciplinary committee to investigate allegations of anti-party activities involving Abia State Governor Alex Otti and other errant members. The NEC also praised the recent Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership dispute, calling it a clear ruling that settled the issue once and for all.
