Israel Deports Two Activists Detained From Gaza-Bound Flotilla

Israel has deported two foreign activists who were detained after Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound flotilla in international waters, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

The activists — Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Avila — were among dozens of people aboard the vessel when it was stopped by the Israeli navy near the Greek island of Crete on April 30.

Israeli authorities said the two men were taken to Israel for questioning, while other activists aboard the flotilla were returned to Crete and released.

In a statement posted on social media Sunday, Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Abu Keshek and Avila had been deported following an investigation.

Video shared online by the Global Sumud Flotilla showed Abu Keshek arriving in Athens, where he thanked his legal team, family, and supporters for advocating on his behalf.

Israeli officials alleged that Abu Keshek was linked to a “terrorist” organization and accused Avila of involvement in illegal activity. Both men denied the allegations, insisting they were participating in a humanitarian mission intended to support civilians in Gaza Strip and arguing that their detention in international waters was unlawful.

The governments of Spain and Brazil, along with the United Nations, had called for the activists’ release.
