In First-Year Address, Trump Assails Biden and Claims Economic Turnaround

President Donald Trump addressed the nation Wednesday night to mark his first year back in office, using the address to criticize the Biden administration, highlight what he described as economic progress, and announce a bonus for U.S. service members funded by tariff revenue.

Speaking in a nationally televised address lasting just under 20 minutes, Trump cast his first year as a turnaround effort following what he called mismanagement by his predecessor.

“Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I’m fixing it,” Trump said. “After just one year, we have achieved more than anyone could have imagined.”

Trump announced that more than 1.4 million active-duty service members will receive what he called a “warrior dividend” — a one-time payment of $1,776.

“The checks are already on the way,” he said, adding that the payments were made possible by higher-than-expected revenue from tariffs. “We made a lot more money than anybody thought because of tariffs.”

Trump has previously floated the idea of issuing dividend checks of up to $2,000 to low- and middle-income Americans using tariff revenue, but he did not revisit that proposal during Wednesday’s address.

Throughout the speech, Trump sharply criticized the Biden administration on immigration, crime and economic policy. He focused heavily on the cost of living — a top concern for voters in recent polls — and used the term “affordability,” which he has previously mocked, to place blame for high prices on his predecessor.

The White House framed the address as both a progress report and a statement of priorities as Trump enters his second year in office.
