Greenfield Tornado Tragedy: Multiple Deaths in Iowa Town

A tornado claimed multiple lives in a small Iowa town as powerful storms swept through the Midwest.

Homes and businesses in Greenfield were destroyed, cars were smashed, and debris was strewn across the landscape.

Iowa police confirmed the fatalities at a news briefing on Tuesday night but could not specify the number.

Nebraska, Illinois, and Wisconsin also experienced tornados, heavy rain, and power outages.

Video footage from Iowa showed flattened buildings, overturned cars, and broken wind turbines.

Greenfield, a town of 2,000 people located about 55 miles from Des Moines, suffered the deadliest tornado.

The town’s hospital was among the damaged buildings, forcing the dozen injured people to seek care elsewhere.

A “good portion” of Greenfield is devastated, Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla told reporters on Tuesday night.

The death toll remains unknown, he said, adding: “We’re still counting at this time.”

Everyone in the town seems to be accounted for, he noted.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced she will visit Greenfield on Wednesday morning to assess the damage.
