Governor Hochul Rejects Pension Bill for Specialized Police Officers Over Cost Concerns

For the fourth consecutive year, New York has denied a pension bill that would have affected over a thousand specialized police officers across the state.

Governor Kathy Hochul rejected the legislation on Friday, citing concerns about its financial impact on the state. The bill sought to allow state forest rangers, park police, and university police officers to retire with an annual pension equal to half their salary after 20 years of service.

Under the current system, officers must serve for at least 25 years to qualify for similar pension benefits.
