Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent potential arrest, detention, and prosecution following his governorship tenure ending in 2027. The second-term governor, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), claims the EFCC has unlawfully threatened him with investigation and legal action.
Sanwo-Olu’s lawyer, Darlington Ozurumba, submitted the fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit seeks a declaration upholding Sanwo-Olu’s rights to privacy, property management, and protection from alleged politically driven corruption claims. Sanwo-Olu argues that any investigation, arrest, or detention threats during his tenure would infringe on his constitutional rights.
The governor contends that the EFCC’s actions are politically motivated, an abuse of power, and intended to undermine his administration. He is requesting an injunction to prevent the EFCC from harassment, intimidation, or prosecution regarding his time in office.
The court has adjourned the case to November 11, following Sanwo-Olu’s replacement of his initial summons with a revised one, which the EFCC stated it had not received. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik has ordered the EFCC to review the new documents ahead of the next hearing.
