Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, pleaded not guilty on Friday to an amended set of charges brought against him by the federal government.
Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday increased the charges from six to twenty, including allegations of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Re-arraigned at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, before Justice Hamza Muazu, Emefiele vehemently denied all charges.
His defense team requested that he maintains the bail previously granted, a plea unopposed by the prosecutor, who emphasized the importance of the former CBN boss attending trial in good health.
Justice Muazu upheld Emefiele’s existing bail conditions, allowing him to travel outside Abuja but remain within Nigeria.
The trial is scheduled to resume on February 12th and 13th.
