Former EFCC Chairman Bawa Released From DSS Custody After Over Four Months

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been released by the Department of State Services (DSS).
President Bola Tinubu suspended Bawa in June, and he has been in custody ever since.
The office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s Director of Information, Willie Bassey, had said that Bawa was placed on suspension due to serious allegations of official misconduct levelled against him.
Bello Matawalle, a former Zamfara State Governor and State Minister of Defence, had accused Bawa of demanding a $2 million bribe from him in which Bawa denied the allegation.
According to Bassey, the suspension was necessary to enable a thorough investigation into his actions during his tenure in office.
According to DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, Bawa was released on Wednesday.
“DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a  few hours ago (today 25th October, 2023)”
A video of Bawa being welcomed by his wives and children has since gone viral.
Sources familiar with the development said, that top former and serving government functionaries had pleaded with the President to order DSS to release Bawa.
“Yes, he was released today after much pressure from who is who in the society,” one of the security sources, who pleaded anonymity said.
After the secret police concluded their investigation with him, according to another source, he was released.
Recall that earlier, DSS operatives ransacked Bawa’s residence and office in the nation’s capital, and he also spent his last Eid-el-Kabir inside the secret police custody.
