At least five people were killed and more than two dozen others injured — including a pregnant woman — after a wave of Russian attacks struck the Kyiv region early Friday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.
Sections of the capital’s heating network were damaged, leaving some buildings without heat, Klitschko added. The Kyiv City State Administration reported that at least 15 buildings across the city had sustained damage.
Ukrainian officials said Russia launched 430 drones and 18 missiles, with debris falling across multiple districts of Kyiv.
The assault came as Ukrainian forces this week carried out a tactical withdrawal from several positions in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region amid intensified Russian attacks, according to military officials.
Russian troops have been firing more than 400 artillery strikes per day, and Ukrainian units have suffered heavy damage to defensive lines, Southern Defense Forces spokesperson Vladyslav Voloshyn told ABC News. The withdrawal affected areas around Novouspenivske, Nove, Okhotnyche, Uspenivka, and Novomykolaivka, he said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the difficult situation on the front but praised soldiers defending Ukrainian positions.
“The situation there remains difficult, in part because of weather conditions that favor the attacks,” Zelenskyy said Tuesday. “But we continue to destroy the occupier, and I thank every one of our units, every warrior involved in defending Ukraine’s positions.”
Ukraine is also bracing for the potential loss of Pokrovsk — a city of roughly 60,000 people before Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion — as Russian forces inch closer after an 18-month battle of attrition. Its fall would mark one of Ukraine’s most significant setbacks of the war.
