First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright Set to Exit Amid Mayor Adams’ Legal Troubles and Public Backlash

First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright is in discussions to leave the Adams administration, with her departure potentially happening as soon as the end of the day, sources tell Eyewitness News.

Wright, who serves as Mayor Eric Adams’ second-in-command, has become a central figure in the unfolding legal drama surrounding the mayor. Authorities searched the home she shares with her husband, Schools Chancellor David Banks, and seized her phone, just before Adams was indicted on charges of fraud, bribery, and accepting improper campaign donations.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Banks would retire on October 16, months earlier than expected.

Adams, meanwhile, faces a steep challenge in the court of public opinion. His approval ratings were already low before the indictment. A Marist poll found that 69% of New York City residents believe the mayor should resign, including 71% of Democrats. Additionally, 80% say he should not seek re-election, though 30% believe he should serve out the rest of his current term.
