In the early hours of Friday, a fire erupted at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road, Ogba, Lagos State. The blaze, which started around 2:20 am, severely damaged a two-story building, specifically affecting one of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5, Block 21. This three-story block contains 16 two-bedroom flats in total.
A preliminary investigation by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) identified an electrical surge in the children’s room of the affected apartment as the cause of the fire. The blaze completely destroyed the children’s bedroom, leading to the loss of property valued at millions of naira.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident and praised the rapid and coordinated response from LASEMA’s Lagos Response Team (LRT), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Their prompt action contained and extinguished the fire before it could spread further, preventing additional damage.
“Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported,” Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu stated. He also noted that authorities used the opportunity to educate residents on proper electrical appliance usage to prevent future incidents.
