FG Unveils Strategy to Address Power Crisis in Public Hospitals

The Federal Government has launched a comprehensive plan to tackle persistent power shortages in public hospitals, emphasizing the need for smart energy solutions to improve healthcare delivery.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Implementation Committee for the National Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector in Abuja, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Adekunle Salako, underscored the growing strain of high energy costs and unreliable power supply on hospital operations.

While some hospitals have adopted alternative energy sources, Salako noted that these efforts remain disjointed and lack a structured framework. He called for a holistic approach, urging medical directors to explore public-private partnerships to drive investment in renewable energy solutions.

Despite government initiatives such as a 50% electricity subsidy for public hospitals and solar mini-grid deployments, the crisis persists, necessitating more innovative and sustainable alternatives. “We can no longer afford business as usual in the face of mounting energy bills in our hospitals,” Salako stated, stressing the importance of a national dialogue to establish regulatory frameworks and funding mechanisms for stable power in healthcare facilities.

The newly inaugurated committee, comprising government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and development partners, is tasked with implementing key recommendations to ensure reliable electricity supply for hospitals nationwide.

Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, vice chairman of the committee, affirmed the commitment to finding practical solutions, while Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Ms. Daju Kachollom, highlighted the devastating impact of power shortages on hospital operations.

Salako also acknowledged the support of Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the Minister of Power in advancing this initiative. He emphasized that achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Nigeria hinges on securing sustainable energy solutions for public hospitals.

With hospitals spending hundreds of millions of naira monthly on electricity, the National Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector aims to shape a roadmap for affordable and reliable energy solutions in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
