The Federal Government has officially handed over 64 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to representatives from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). The presentation took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Sunday, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
Leading the government delegation, Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, highlighted that these buses are expected to reduce transportation costs and improve the country’s public transport infrastructure. He noted that this initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader strategy to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removals under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PCNGi).
The government aims to roll out over 500 CNG buses and 100 electric vehicles as part of the initial phase, with a focus on transitioning to cleaner energy and fostering industrial growth. Labour leaders and student representatives commended the initiative, calling on the government to broaden access to CNG buses throughout the country.
