The Federal Government has abruptly suspended the proposed sale of subsidized rice to civil servants, which had originally offered a 50 kg bag of rice at a reduced price of N40,000.
This development was communicated in a circular issued by the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs on August 2, 2024. The document, signed by the Director of Human Resources, Aderonke Jaiyesimi, did not provide any explanation for the sudden suspension. It remains unclear whether the program has been permanently canceled or if the suspension is only temporary.
Previously, in a circular dated August 1, 2024, civil servants had been invited to apply for the subsidized rice by filling out a Google form available on the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) website.
The distribution process was to be monitored by designated offices, with the Chairman of the Joint Union Council of the ministry acting as an observer to ensure transparency.
